Hello ladies and gents, I am back! I apologize to everyone for my absence and I will try to prevent it from happening again. Now, lets cut the crap and get into what you really came for. First, some background on my history with Assassin's Creed. I didn't play any of the first couple games; the first title that I played was Assassin's Creed: 3. I hated this game. It was short, ugly, and just downright boring. When Black Flag dropped, I just had to get it. The thought of ships and a huge, vast world to explore intrigued me. I loved that game. When I was having a bad day I could just load up my ship and sail the seas for hours - fishing, wailing, hunting, and exploring. I couldn't have been more impressed with this game. But this game soon became boring. I had explored everything, killed everything, completed every mission, etc. I packed away this game and didn't think about it for a while. I switched to games that just never get boring like World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, etc.
So first a background on the Game Itself. You are Arno, french civilian at the start, Assassin by the end. Son to a murdered Assassin, adopted by a Templar. France itself is in turmoil due to the distrust of the government. The cheesy twisted romance in this game reminds me of a modern day Shakespeare. The sheer number of the mobs that are protesting the government give you a pretty good idea of just whats going on.
I didn't play AC: Unity until my friend told me just how awesome it was. I figured, eh, why not. I had just finished building my computer and so I thought, what better way to try out my new EVGA Nvidia 980 GPU. So I bought my 60 dollar plane ticket into France. I maxed out all of the graphics and started playing.
I immediately wanted to get into combat to see if they really had implemented the “Flexible Combat System” that they mentioned during development. Well, they didn't. Save exact combat system. Click, click, parry, click, dodge, click. There, enemy dead. I was very disappointed by this. We have been fighting the same way for years… This brings me to a score of 6.5/10 in the combat region.
I started exploring around France a bit and man, It was beautiful. All I could say was Hot diggity dog. The glorious landscapes, Sprawling city streets, the riots, the guards, the peasants, just everything. Detailed to the T. I wouldn't play this game if the graphics were terrible. Overall Graphics wise I would have to give it a 7.5/10.
The quest line sucks, a lot. Its just a cheesy classic love, murder story. But with the added fact that his lover is his, um, sister. Not much to say about the quest line just that if you want to see something similar watch Disney channel. Through the bad and cheesy storyline you really get a chance to connect with Arno. He is by far my favorite assassin we have met so far. You can really feel his charm and deceit throughout. Overall I give the Storyline a solid 4/10.
Now I am going to talk a bit about movement. Normally for most games I wouldn't talk about the movement because its irrelevant. But in AC movement is key, as you spend 50% of your time jumping on rooftops. They have done a nice job with the movement compared the others in the AC series. When you are walking through crowds the AI’s don't just walk out of the way. They make remarks to you and glance at you as you push your way through. Hiding is also much better as you can now blend in with crows with actions such as, sitting on benches. Its the little things that really count in a game like this and I think that they did nicely with it. When you walk past a guard they wont notice you, but if you get close to a guard and sprint off away from them they will become suspicious and possibly pursue. They added another movement feature which is the ability to free run up or down. So now you no longer just have to hold shift and run forward to get to where you want to go. This opens up many other opportunities. You can navigate much faster in many more ways thanks to this and you really get to be the assassin you have dreamed of being. I would rate the movement in this game a 9/10. Well Done.
Playability is an important overarching part of all games. And sadly to say, they released this game way to early. Way, way, to early. I got stuck on about 6 different loading screens in which I had to repeatedly “repair” the game on steam. This wasted about 3 hours of my time. 3 precious hours in which I could have been productive but the stupid game wouldn't load. Whether it was missing files or it would just simply glitch out. It was kind of disappointing. Other than that there were a lot of in game issues that would make sections of the game unplayable. I would give playability a 5/10.
Now to conclude my review I would just like to say thank you for reading this. I hope you love the world as much as I do. But to average all of the scores we achieve a grand total of 8/10 or a 4 out of 5 in Slash Skill terms. Good luck and have fun!
